What to Pack for Hiking in Mauritius

Packing correctly for a Mauritian hike can make the difference between a great day and a miserable one. The tropical climate, volcanic rock, and sudden weather changes all need to be considered.

Footwear

This is the most important item. Trails in Mauritius often involve basalt rock, mud, and stream crossings. Choose:

  • **Sturdy hiking shoes** or trail runners with aggressive tread for most trails.
  • **Water shoes or grippy sandals** for Tamarind Falls and other waterfall hikes.
  • Avoid regular sneakers, flip-flops, and smooth-soled shoes.
  • Water and snacks

Dehydration is a real risk. Bring at least 1.5–2 liters of water for a half-day hike and 2–3 liters for a full-day peak. High-energy snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, and energy bars help maintain energy on steep ascents.

    Sun and rain protection

The tropical sun is intense, especially on exposed ridges. Pack:

  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • Wide-brimmed hat or cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Lightweight rain jacket
  • Clothing

Wear light, breathable, quick-dry layers. Long sleeves and light trousers can protect against sun and the occasional leech in wet forest sections. A light fleece is useful for windy summits.

    Daypack essentials

  • Small first-aid kit
  • Fully charged phone
  • Offline map or downloaded GPX track
  • Insect repellent
  • Cash for park fees or transport tips
  • Optional extras

  • Trekking poles for steep descents
  • Headlamp if hiking near dawn or dusk
  • Camera or binoculars for wildlife
  • Final tip

Pack light but pack smart. Keeping your hands free is important on scrambling sections, so use a comfortable backpack and avoid dangling items.
