Route Description
The Black River Peak trail begins near the Pétrin Information Centre in Black River Gorges National Park. After registering, the path climbs steadily through endemic forest, crossing ridges and occasional muddy sections before reaching the 828 m summit — the highest point in Mauritius.
The route is roughly 9–10 km return and takes 5–6 hours. While the trail is well marked, navigation can be tricky after rain, and the park has no water sources, so come fully prepared. Do not start after 9:00 AM if you want to return before afternoon weather changes.
From the summit, clear days reveal both the east and west coasts of Mauritius, plus the forested heart of the national park.
