Le Morne Brabant Hike — Mauritius' Most Iconic Summit
A complete guide to hiking Le Morne Brabant in Mauritius: difficulty, route, safety, what to bring, and why a certified guide is essential for the technical upper section.
Route Description
Le Morne Brabant has two distinct sections. Section 1 is a gradual, well-trodden path of about 2.5 km that gains roughly 260 m. It is suitable for fit hikers with no technical scrambling and offers excellent coastal views. The official trailhead opens at 7:00 AM and the latest permitted start is 2:30 PM.
Section 2 is only 760 m long but rises another 230 m to the summit cross. It is Grade 3 scrambling: steep, exposed, and requires good balance and a head for heights. A Release of Liability Form is mandatory, and hikers under 13, those with poor fitness, or anyone uncomfortable with exposure should not attempt it. A certified guide is strongly recommended for Section 2.
From the cross, on clear days you can see the lagoon, the "underwater waterfall" optical illusion, and the entire Morne peninsula. Descend the same way, allowing roughly 2–2.5 hours for the full round trip.
