Route Description

Pieter Both is the second-highest peak in Mauritius and one of its most dramatic. The route climbs through forest, follows steep inclines and narrow ridges, and finishes with exposed rock scrambling near the summit.

The famous balancing boulder at the true summit now requires climbing gear to reach safely. Most guided hikes stop at the shoulder just below, which still offers outstanding views.

The trail is marked in places with plastic bottles, but GPS signal can weaken near the gullies. Two gullies require climbing moves, and the rocks become dangerously slick after rain. Plan 5 hours for the full hike.

Safety Notes

  • A certified guide is strongly recommended if you lack scrambling experience.
  • Turn back if you see running water in the drainage gullies — rocks above will be wet.
  • Wear boots with excellent traction.
  • Carry at least 2 liters of water.
  • Do not attempt the true summit boulder without climbing gear and experience.

What to Bring

  • Sturdy hiking boots with excellent traction
  • 2 liters of water
  • High-energy snacks and lunch
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Light backpack to keep hands free for scrambling
  • Basic first-aid kit
